Energy Corridor to Experience First-of-its-Kind with Kendall Neighborhood Library and Community Center

The Bell Sherman Kendall Neighborhood Library and Community Center, which broke ground last month, is the first combined library and community center to be built in Houston. The new 19,000 sq. foot facility, located adjacent to Terry Hershey Park at 609 N. Eldridge, will replace the existing Kendall Neighborhood Library and provide a new Houston Parks and Recreation Department Community Center. The state-of-the-art facility offers the city its first three-story neighborhood library as well as its first drive up window.

The first floor of the facility will house the Houston Parks and Recreation Department Community Center in addition to the library’s check-in and check-out services. The second floor will feature the adult collection and reading areas. The third floor will showcase children’s and teen collections and additional reading areas.

The library will incorporate the latest technology, both for public use and operational efficiency. Customers will have access to 29 computer stations, laptops for on-site checkout, reference services, self-check stations and a large on-site collection of books, periodicals, music, movies and reference materials.

Offering a park-like library setting and a connection to hike and bike trails, the project includes many “green” building components and is seeking Silver-level certification in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

The Kendall Community Center will provide after-school and summer recreational programming and will include a class room and fully-equipped half gym.

Construction of the new building is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
